Irma Sofía Gómez

of Ciudad Vieja, Sacatepéquez

Becoming pregnant inspired Irma Sofía Gómez to leave her job in a Guatemalan sweatshop, seeking a better future for her family. However, during her time there, a love of sewing had been sparked within her. Determined to build a new path, she sought out a local seamstress in her neighborhood, paying for lessons to refine her craft. With the unwavering support of her husband, she expanded her expertise to include pattern making. In 2016, she transformed her home, creating a dedicated workshop where her sisters and community members could work in a safe, supportive environment. Irma is meticulous about quality, with a deep understanding of the delicate touch required to work with handwoven textiles.
