Magdalena
of Santa Catarina Palopó, Sololá
Maria Magdalena Ajpuz Cumes—known simply as Magdalena—comes from the vibrant village of Santa Catarina Palopó, nestled along the shores of Lake Atitlán. The town is known not only for its scenic beauty but also for its hand-painted facades, which mirror the traditional patterns woven into the region’s textiles.
Magdalena learned to weave on a backstrap loom from her mother at the age of 12. Today, it remains her sole profession and deepest passion. For her, weaving is more than a livelihood—it’s a way to protect and preserve the techniques that are distinct to her community. She now leads a group of six backstrap weavers in Santa Catarina Palopó, helping ensure the continuity of this ancestral craft.
Weaving a single traditional huipil in her village can take up to a month, with 3–4 hours of meticulous work each day—each piece a testament to patience, skill, and artistry.

Handwoven by Lidia on a traditional foot loom in Guatemala, this vibrant pillow serves as a textural foundation—bringing together all the colors of our collection in one beautifully balanced piece. It’s designed to ground a layered space, a hallmark of Regan’s style, where depth, texture, and color come together in thoughtful harmony.
The twisted threads that run through the weave are more than just decorative—they’re a technical detail that requires immense skill, precision, and control on the loom. These subtle twists add movement and dimension, giving the pillow a tactile richness that invites both visual interest and touch.
In Maya culture, vibrant color is never random. Every hue carries emotion, meaning, and identity. The combination of these bold tones in one piece celebrates the joy, resilience, and cultural depth of the artisans who bring it to life—thread by thread, tradition by tradition.
Whether used as a grounding element or a bold accent, this pillow ties the full story of the collection together—one that honors both craft and composition.

The moment we saw the first sample, we knew this blanket could only be called Feliz—Spanish for “happy.” In Maya culture, color is more than decoration; it’s a language of emotion, celebration, and identity. Feliz honors that spirit with radiant hues carefully chosen and arranged to spark joy and warmth.
This blanket is a true original by Lidia. The weaver developed and mastered a one-of-a-kind technique to achieve its signature look—layering vibrant colors in a way that creates movement, dimension, and visual rhythm. Woven panel by panel on a traditional loom, each section is later joined by hand using a custom criss-cross stitch invented just for this piece. The stitch isn’t just structural—it adds a playful, tactile detail that echoes the design’s joyful intent.
We also pulled colors from across our collections to create a palette that feels both nostalgic and fresh, enhancing the blanket’s versatility. Made from luxuriously soft cotton, Feliz is as comforting to the touch as it is uplifting to the eye—an expression of happiness, handwoven into every thread.

Tucked away in a home textile archive—our favorite treasure trove—this intricate weaving technique was a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered. The spark came unexpectedly: a striking Alexander McQueen dress spotted by Regan on Madison Avenue. Its structure and detail reminded us of this traditional craftsmanship and inspired a new vision—where threads, not seams, could hold the design together with intention and artistry.
After the fabric is expertly handwoven, it is transformed once more through hand-stitched detailing between each color block—stitches that symbolically "hold the bricks together," echoing both the construction of a garment and the foundations of a community. Named Ladrillo—Spanish for "brick"—this pillow reimagines something solid and structural into something soft and expressive. It speaks to the essence of Maya weaving: translating the physical world into texture, pattern, and color, while infusing everyday objects with beauty and meaning.
Each hand stitch is placed with extraordinary care by Lidia, finding harmony between vibrant blocks with an intuitive sense of balance. The weavers don’t work within strict direction or mapped-out designs—just inspiration. Their innate understanding of color and composition guides the process, resulting in a piece that feels both spontaneous and deeply rooted.
With its rich palette and graphic detail, Ladrillo is a warm, versatile piece—an homage to Guatemalan streets, resilience, and the creative power of reinterpretation.
