Mariposa Throw Pillow
This pillow is thoughtfully constructed from three individually woven panels, joined together in the same tradition as the huipil—the handwoven blouse worn by Indigenous Maya women in Guatemala. Like the huipil, each panel is created on a backstrap loom, a technique deeply rooted in ancestral knowledge and cultural identity.
Woven in the highland community of Nahualá, this piece showcases the region’s renowned brocade technique. Every motif is formed line by line, with each color meticulously hand-placed—a process that demands remarkable skill, memorization, and mathematical precision. The recurring zigzag symbolizes the serpent, revered in Maya culture as the god of wisdom, the earth, and abundance. At the top and bottom of the center panel, we see the suggestion of a mariposa—butterfly—often seen as a spirit of the forest and a messenger of the soul in Maya belief.
With a harmonious blend of our signature color palette, this pillow pairs beautifully with other pieces in our collection, while standing on its own as a story-rich work of art.
