Gudi Perez

of San Antonio Palopó, Sololá

Gudi, a second-generation foot loom weaver, is the youngest artisan we collaborate with. Supporting the next generation of weavers is essential to preserving Guatemala’s rich textile heritage, and Gudi embodies this mission with his eagerness to learn and experiment with new techniques. He works from his family’s weaving workshop, perched on the top floor of their home, where breathtaking views of Lake Atitlán and its three surrounding volcanoes provide endless inspiration. Creativity runs deep in his family—his siblings specialize in painting, backstrap weaving, and ceramics, each contributing to a legacy of artistry.

Rayas Accent Pillow
$250.00

Handwoven on a traditional footloom by Gudi, this pillow reflects the meditative rhythm of the artisan's craft—a central aspect of Guatemalan weaving. For many weavers, the steady, repetitive motion of creating textiles is not only a livelihood but also a form of mindfulness, passed down through generations. The stripe pattern, or rayas, is a common and meaningful motif found across the country, often inspired by the natural world—mountain ridges, rows of crops, or the flow of rivers. These lines carry deep cultural resonance, symbolizing continuity, connection, and landscape.

Stripes also serve a functional and aesthetic purpose in design, adding visual depth and subtle texture that invites layering. Their clean geometry can ground a space or add dimension when mixed with other patterns. In this piece, the refined rayas are rendered in timeless, versatile hues that allow the pillow to integrate effortlessly into a range of interiors, while celebrating the heritage and artistry of Guatemalan weaving.
