Designed to replicate the intricate motifs of traditional backstrap weaving on a larger scale, the process requires the precise coordination of 40 heddles. For each line of pattern, the weaver lifts a specific sequence of ropes by hand, guided by a meticulously drafted graph-paper design. This labor-intensive method can take up to eight times longer than weaving a solid fabric.

Each loom used is custom-built by local carpenters and tailored specifically to support this sophisticated technique. The floral motif woven into this throw is timeless and versatile, rich with symbolic meaning—one of many reasons falsería serves as a cornerstone of our collection.

We named this design Montaña, the Spanish word for "mountain," in honor of the highland communities we work with in Guatemala. Mountain motifs, traditionally symbolized by zig zags, appear frequently in Maya textiles—an enduring presence in the region's geography and history. During Guatemala’s armed conflict, many weavers were displaced to remote mountain villages, yet these motifs predate even that period, found in some of the oldest surviving textiles. Alongside the zigzag, this design incorporates the diamond, symbolizing the four cardinal directions, and the flower—a nod to Guatemala’s nickname as the “land of eternal spring.”

Woven in narrow panels, the throw is constructed by Irma using a flat felt seam for durability and structure. The edges are finished with a meticulous hand-stitched blanket edge, adding refinement and strength to this heirloom-quality piece.

The moment we saw the first sample, we knew this blanket could only be called Feliz—Spanish for “happy.” In Maya culture, color is more than decoration; it’s a language of emotion, celebration, and identity. Feliz honors that spirit with radiant hues carefully chosen and arranged to spark joy and warmth.

This blanket is a true original by Lidia. The weaver developed and mastered a one-of-a-kind technique to achieve its signature look—layering vibrant colors in a way that creates movement, dimension, and visual rhythm. Woven panel by panel on a traditional loom, each section is later joined by hand using a custom criss-cross stitch invented just for this piece. The stitch isn’t just structural—it adds a playful, tactile detail that echoes the design’s joyful intent.

We also pulled colors from across our collections to create a palette that feels both nostalgic and fresh, enhancing the blanket’s versatility. Made from luxuriously soft cotton, Feliz is as comforting to the touch as it is uplifting to the eye—an expression of happiness, handwoven into every thread.

Inspired by Camino—Spanish for “road”—this design honors the journeys we take in life, both physical and personal. In Guatemalan culture, roads connect people, places, and generations. The shift in stripe direction is an artistic nod to life’s unexpected turns—moments of change, growth, and new perspective.

The palette celebrates the vibrant color language of Guatemalan textiles: pink for love and celebration, orange for warmth and energy, lavender for peace and spirituality, green for nature and renewal, and blue for the sky and water—symbols of grounding and expansiveness.

Finished with hand-knotted tassels by Irma, each one carefully wrapped, tied, and trimmed by hand, this piece is a true labor of love. The throw is backed with solid handwoven fabric for added weight and durability, making it a meaningful, artful layer that brings depth and story to any space.

Due to the loom’s width limitations, this piece was woven in narrow panels, each one aligned with great precision.
